Bearing Fruit

Two large-scale, site-specific installations are part of Cooper Hewitt’s 2019 Triennial entitled “Nature,” in partnership with Cube Design Museum. For The Tree of 40 Fruit, artist Sam van Aken used traditional techniques to graft disparate branches together to yield apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries and apricots—all from one tree! When blossoming, the tree looks like an artistic bouquet, but the true purpose is to preserve heirloom and rare fruit varieties from old orchards. Petrified River by Ensamble Studio architects, is a 40-foot-long concrete “river” bookended by a “pond” and a “hill” representing how the wild landscape of Manhattan has been rendered unrecognizable by urbanization.
